How to Play Flap Rush (and Actually Beat Your Best)

Flap Rush takes five seconds to learn and a long time to master. This guide covers the controls, the tapping rhythm that separates a score of 5 from a score of 50, and the three mistakes that end most runs.

The controls

There is exactly one input. Tap anywhere on the screen on a phone or tablet, or press Space on a keyboard. Each tap flaps your beast upward; between taps, gravity pulls you down. Clear the gap between each pair of pipes to score a point.

Step 1 โ€” Build a rhythm, don't panic-tap

The single biggest score killer is machine-gun tapping when you drop too low. Each tap adds upward force, so three fast taps launch you into the top pipe.

Instead, settle into a steady beat of small taps that keeps your beast hovering around the middle of the screen. From the middle you can correct in either direction. From the top or bottom you can only correct one way.

Step 2 โ€” Enter every gap slightly low

Falling is smooth and predictable. Flapping is a sudden burst. So approach each gap a little below centre and let a single tap carry you through the middle. Players who approach high almost always clip the top pipe, because the only correction available is doing nothing โ€” and gravity is slower than they expect.

Step 3 โ€” Look ahead, not at your beast

Watch the next gap, not the one you are in. By the time a pipe is next to you, your position is already decided. Reading one gap ahead gives you time to set your height before you arrive, which is exactly how high scorers survive the fast late game.

Step 4 โ€” Take gems only when they're free

Gems spawn inside pipe gaps and add bonus points (double for Skin Pass players). They are worth taking when they sit on the line you were already flying. A gem tucked against the top or bottom of a gap is a trap โ€” the points never make up for ending a 40-point run.

Step 5 โ€” Handle the speed ramp

The longer you survive, the faster pipes come and the tighter gaps get. Your rhythm has to get smaller and quicker, not bigger. Late in a run, shorten your taps rather than adding more of them, and keep your eyes further ahead.

The three mistakes that end most runs

  • Over-tapping after a scare โ€” one recovery tap, then back to rhythm.
  • Greedy gem grabs โ€” never break your line for a point.
  • Cold starts โ€” your first run after a break is always your worst. Use Play Again and treat the first two runs as a warm-up.

Practise every day

Flap Rush tracks a daily streak and your best score for today. Short daily sessions beat one long session โ€” timing is muscle memory, and it comes back faster than it builds. Ready? Start a run or read more high score tips.
